Gynecomastia
Women are not the only ones who desire breast reduction surgery – nearly half of the male population suffer from oversized breasts. The main cause of male breast overdevelopment is not entirely clear, although certain drugs and medical problems are linked to this condition. This is why knowing your medical history before meeting with Dr. Thompson during a consultation visit is important. During this time, he can help to determine if breast reduction surgery is the right procedure for you. In some extreme cases, a mammogram or breast X-ray is recommended for the condition of “gynecomastia.”
The best type of patients wanting to correct gynecomastia should be healthy and emotionally stable men with firm, elastic skin. While offering a more masculine contour, this procedure can help a patient feel less self-conscious and more confident with their appearance.
PROCEDURE
Usually, male breast reduction surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, but in some situations, an overnight hospital stay be recommended. The technique used for male breast reduction surgery will depend on the patient’s condition. Typically, if excessive glandular tissue is the primary cause of breast enlargement it will be excised, or cut out, with a scalpel. The incisions are normally made in an inconspicuous location, such as on the edge of the areola or in the under arm area. Should Dr. Thompson need to remove a significant amount of tissue and skin, larger incisions will need to be made. This could possibly lead to bigger and more noticeable scars. Still, the end result could be well worth it for someone who is unhappy with their body.
Liposuction may be used in conjunction with gynecomastia; however, if enlarged breasts are composed primarily of excessive fatty tissue, liposuction can be used alone. In this case, a small incision is made around the edge of the areola or in the underarm area, which is where the cannula will be inserted. This procedure may be performed under general, or in some cases, under local anesthesia plus sedation.
With the extreme cases where a massive amount of fat or glandular has been removed, the skin may have trouble adapting to the smaller breast contour; calling for the removal of excess skin as well.
RECOVER AND RESULTS
For a few days after surgery, it is normal to feel discomfort. Dr. Thompson may prescribe certain medication to help alleviate the pain. Don’t be surprised if you’re swollen or bruised for awhile – it’s normal. You will probably be required to wear an elastic pressure garment for about a week or two. You will be advised to avoid strenuous activities for a few weeks. Even though your final results may not come into full view for about three months or longer, don’t let that get you down. Your new look is just around the corner.
